Leeds Metropolitan University became an accredited ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management) Centre in April 2009, with the aim of developing in-house programmes which were tailored to the specific development needs of its managers and leaders. The programmes play a key part in the University’s broader aim to create a high performance organisation through the development of effective leaders and managers at all levels.
The first programmes were rolled out during 2009/10, accredited at ILM Levels 5 and 7. The Learning Grove was commissioned to design and deliver both the ILM Level 5 and ILM 7 Leadership Awards. Both programmes have recently ended, and feedback has been exceptional. The programmes are tailored to the specific need of managers and leaders across the organisation. This ensured (and feedback has highlighted this) that the delegates found the programmes of particular benefit to them in their roles. Huw’s design takes into consideration both the culture of the organisation as well as its strategic direction. It includes both a mix of traditional leadership theory as well as current best practice and thinking. That said, despite the theoretical underpinning of Huw’s work, the delivery is experiential and allows delegates the opportunity to practice what they have learnt and relate back to their workplace.
Huw requests ongoing feedback from both delegates and key stakeholders, and will adapt modules if necessary – as a key stakeholder I was particularly impressed with his ability to flex if required. Because Huw has designed and delivered both the ILM 5 and 7 programmes, it has enabled us to build in modules which are consistent across both levels; for example coaching and emotional intelligence. This will lead to a shared understanding of such topics across all levels of managers within the University.
Taking part in the ILM5 Personal Leadership Programme has been………….
“Both challenging (in terms of taking stock and evaluating oneself) and affirming at the same time – highly rewarding for me personally and ultimately I hope for those I work with.” (delegate comment)
